Weekly Gaming Update #10 – Let Me Tell You All The Ways You Can Die

Ways I’ve died in Breath Of The Wild:

  • Lasers
  • Falling off cliffs
  • Getting hit off cliffs
  • Lyonels
  • Jumped in ice cold water
  • More lasers
  • Pressing the attack button instead of the glide button in the air

I also almost died by stepping on someone’s flowers.  Good times.

New Games Started:

Metal Gear Rising: Revengence – In Progress

Games Beaten:

Style Savvy: Fashion Forward
This was pretty fun!  I will admit the general gameplay loop can get tiresome after a while, and only being allowed to have 1,000 clothing items at the store was really a pain (look, dresses and earrings don’t take up the same amount of room, okay?), but I really enjoyed it overall.  Well actually, I didn’t like fixing up people’s make up that much compared to hair and clothes, but it’s easy enough to ignore it most of the time.  I wish it was just a bit easier to unlock the colors, though… having season dependent colors makes sense, but it’s also a pain.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
I didn’t so much play this game as watch it.  So many cutscenes.  I got so used to the cutscenes that I got antsy when I played for more than 20 minutes without an interruption or infodump.  That ending, though… it just never ended.  I started the final act at 7:00PM, thinking I had enough time to get through everything before bed at 10PM, but… clearly I wasn’t expecting an hour and a half ending.  There was too much to process.  Also it’s very, very clear that 4 was supposed to be the end of the series storywise… I guess I can understand why people dislike The Phantom Pain’s plot.  Yes, I know it’s earlier in the Metal Gear timeline, but I’m going to guess that Kojima REALLY phoned that plot in.

In Progress:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
How I managed to beat two games while this is dominating the vast majority of my time, I could never tell you.  I love love love this game.  It’s amazing.  I just love exploring the areas, finding shrines and other little goodies.  I freed my first Divine Beast, and I’m up to… either 8 or 9 hearts, just a few more before I can get the Master Sword.  I can craft Ancient gear too, but I have to brave the Guardians to do so.  But man, I don’t even think I’ve explored half the map yet… I haven’t even gotten to the other three races’ villages yet!  I’ve only run across the Zoras so far, although a traveler told me where to find the Ritos… but of course, there are a bunch of Guardians along the way.  It’ll be a dangerous trek!

Metal Gear Rising: Revengence
What is happening?  Oh, Raiden, you have red blood now, that’s great!  Oh, but you probably shouldn’t be losing so much of it… Wait, are you really wearing a mariachi outfit?  Did you really just say, and I quote, “stealth ops are my specialty” when you literally cut through doors instead of opening them?  Wait I can buy the mariachi outfit and wear it for the rest of the game?  Cool, I won’t even bother to try to unpack whatever is happening in this insane game, then.

Goals for Next Week:

  • Finish up Metal Gear Rising, it’s quite short and it’ll knock out another game for my Metal Gear goal this year.
  • Just play more Breath of the Wild.

I did pretty well with progress this week, considering Breath of the Wild being in the picture.  See you next week!

Weekly Gaming Update #9 – I Couldn’t Resist Zelda

I hadn’t planned on buying Breath of the Wild right away.  But the utterly fantastic reviews and confirmation that the Wii U version was largely the same (even performance wise) as compared to the Switch version made me take the plunge.  It was a little hard to find a copy in town, though… thank goodness for mom and pop shops!

Okay, let’s get to it.

New Games Bought:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
I explained above.

New Games Started:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – In Progress

In Progress:

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
I started this back when I beat the original Metal Gear Solid during my Summer Gaming Challenge last year, but only played for an hour or so before getting distracted.  However, I have a goal of attempting to beat all the Metal Gear series games I own (which is… all of them, as it turns out), so might as well continue this one first!  I’m in Act 3 now, I don’t really know what’s going on… This one is even weird than 2, and there are just a TON of cutscenes.  Lots of info dumps.  The gameplay is still fun, of course.

Style Savvy: Fashion Forward
I took a bit of a break but I’m back at this.  I’m working towards hosting the third fashion show one, and I believe once that’s done I’ve beaten the game.  So cool!

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Played for a few hours, climbed things, died in silly ways.  I’m just about to leave the Plateau and I’m just having a blast.  Can’t wait to play more!

Goals for Next Week:

Make sure other games don’t fall by the wayside for more Breath of the Wild.

We’ll see how well I hit that goal next week.

Weekly Gaming Update #8 – My DS Collection is Complete!

This has nothing to do with my backlog, but I got the final DS game that I wanted in the mail today.  With Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow adorning my DS shelves, my collection is officially complete!  On top of that, I’ve already beaten Dawn of Sorrow in the past, so it doesn’t count towards anything in my backlog (and I won’t count it as a new game here, either).

Alright, let’s get to it.

New Games Started:

Atelier Sophie: Alchemist of the Mysterious Book – In Progress
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze – In Progress

Games Beaten:

If My Heart Had Wings
Overall, I’m a bit mixed on this one.  I thought the overall story was good, and the length decent (though maybe it dragged just a little bit at times)… but it’s clear that the plot revolves around the main heroine, and as a result, I’m not sure why the other character paths are even there.   I can’t imagine the story being compelling at all if it was about any of the other four girls I could date, and the story seems to agree as three out of the other four are locked until you complete Kotori’s path.  Maybe I’ll go back and see, I’m always a sucker for trying to complete VNs… it’s just so easy to!  I was the translation didn’t drop off at the end, though…

In Progress:

Style Savvy: Fashion Forward
Still dressing people up, selling tickets, and so on.  Trying to find colors, too, but I keep forgetting to boot it up at night and visit places.

Atelier Sophie: Alchemist of the Mysterious Book
I’ve only played about an hour.  I know GUST aren’t exactly graphical masters, but man, this game could easily run on a PS3.  Also my friends are telling me that this entry may not be all that great… we’ll see, I guess, but I’m not too pumped.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
My boyfriend and I are co-oping this together.  It’s a challenging game and we both suck at it.  We’re in the second world and already got three game overs!  It’s going to be a long trek…

Goals for Next Week:

  • Focus on Style Savvy a little more.  Maybe even beat it!
  • Maybe figure out what, if anything, I still need to buy to complete my PS3, 3DS, and Wii collections.

That about does it this week!

Weekly Gaming Update #7 – I’m free

Is being free a state of mind, though?  Are we ever truly free?  There’s some pretentious pseudo-philosophy for you this week.

New Games Bought:

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth
It was $10 at Gamestop, and I resisted… but then is was $10 at Amazon, so I had to grab it for the PS4.  I was going to just skip it and get Next Order sometime, but the price is in that ‘impulse buy’ range.  I don’t know when I’ll get to it, though.

Games Beaten:

LISA: The Joyful
I got the Lisa epilogue, at least, and the ending were Buddy doesn’t turn into a Joy monster.  I still have so many questions left though… I realize that the series just isn’t supposed to answer all your questions about with pages of exposition and extreme plot twists… and while a lot is just left up to vague theorizing with The Painful, the thing about The Joyful is that it gives you those glimpses into what’s “really” happening, and just a bit about the mad plot that’s happening to this slice of the planet. But it doesn’t go anywhere with it.  It’s a tad frustrating, but that’s just the nature of a cruel world, I guess.  In the end, LISA is a tale of a fucked up family in a fucked up world, and it pulls off the tale wonderfully.

In Progress:

Style Savvy: Fashion Forward
I think I’m making good progress.  I have quite a few booths unlocked, and I’m working on getting tickets sold for the second fashion show.  The game loop is fun, but it can also get pretty tiring (everyone wants a girly outfit, come on game), so I really like playing it in hour bursts.  Also I really don’t like doing makeup… but doing hair is fun!

If My Heart Had Wings
I’ve really warmed up to this one.  The characters are becoming a bit more endearing, particularly Kotori… which is good, because it’s clear the story is as much about her as it will be about the ‘Soaring Club’.  I’ll go for her path first, as least (and not just because I can’t access two other paths without completing hers first…)

Goals For Next Week:

I still want to just start a bunch of games… but I really want to at least get through some of these games I’m in the middle of first.  I think I’ll start Atelier Sophie soon, though, it’s always nice to have a relaxing game to delve into during the week.

That about does it!  Hopefully next week won’t be huge with a ton of games in progress.

Weekly Gaming Update #6 – Did I Do The Right Thing?

Good god Brad, no.  No, you did not.

New Games Bought:

Style Savvy: Fashion Forward
I didn’t technically buy it, as my boyfriend got it for me for Valentine’s Day. But it’s added to the backlog regardless, so it goes in here!  I’ve always wanted to play this game, but couldn’t really justify buying it for myself.

New Games Started:

Style Savvy: Fashion Forward – In Progress
If My Heart Had Wings – In Progress
LISA: The Joyful – In Progress

Games Beaten:

LISA: The Painful
This was a doozy.  All the way back for Extra Life 2015, I played a good chunk of this game for my 24 hour stream.  After that, though, I didn’t touch it again–I remember being rather frustrated with the game, but… considering that I was gaming live for a good 18 hours, the fact that I kept jumping to my death was a rather… trivial complaint when I played again.  So, yesterday I booted it up, and just beat it.  It’s a flawed, but wonderful game–I would have given up had I not looked up a damn map for the place, or caved and used a walkthrough for the last area, but the setting and the dark plot is quite good, even if the game does try to beat the “THIS PLACE SUCKS” hammer over your head a few too many times.

Games Completed:

Pokemon Sun
I beat Pokemon Sun last year, but this week marks a different goal for this game… I’ve completed the Alolan Pokedex!  It only took a grand total of 64 hours too.  My Pokemon from all my older games helped with this goal A LOT… although I still had to evolve a Garchomp (seriously, where did my first one go?).  Not only that, but I made a Living Alolan Dex (one of each Pokemon in the box), so filling out that Pokedex in the future will be way easier.  There is no National Dex in Sun and Moon, so thankfully I didn’t have to get all 800+ Pokemon, although I do have a large amount of them… I may work on a Living National Dex in the future, but for now I’m setting this aside to work on my backlog more.

In Progress:

LISA: The Joyful
I’m only a short way into this, but I’m pretty excited to see where this ends.  It’s cool to be able to play as Buddy, and see… well, the continuation of what the cycle of all the shitty stuff that happens has shaped her psyche.  Spoilers, it’s not in a good way.

Style Savvy: Fashion Forward
A couple hours into this, and having a blast making new outfits and stuff.  I’m still not done with the tutorial stuff, I think.

If My Heart Had Wings
Played for about an hour one night this week, as I used the Backloggery’s Fortune Cookie to choose something for me.  This VN has quite a few good reviews, but the game also released before the visual novel popularity exploded in the West over the last year or two, so I’m wondering if the game stacks up to the far larger selection of today.  I’m not impressed so far, but I’ll give it another hour or two before passing judgement.

Shining Force II
I was playing this for my Summer Gaming Challenge last year, but I stopped about halfway through, mostly out of boredom to be honest.  I’ve picked it back up, gotten through a few more battles, and now I’m about to heal a sick dwarf or something.  Steam’s Sega Classics emulator make my computer crazy hot for some reason, and if I plug my laptop into my TV the audio gets majorly messed up (doesn’t happen with my other games), so it’s kind of annoying me.  I might download a different emulator and ROM and continue on that, if I can pull the save data file out and it’s compatible.  A Genesis game should not be causing my computer to overheat when the likes of Life Is Strange was fine.

Goals for Next Week:

Well, my attention is a little divided, I’m in a bit of a slump and I don’t really know what I want to play.  Hopefully over the course of the week I can decide what to do next.

That about does it!  Hopefully I’ll knock out a lot of these in progress games next week, whether they are beats or I just remove them from my backlog entirely.  See you next time!
