Weekly Gaming Update #6 – Did I Do The Right Thing?

Good god Brad, no.  No, you did not.

New Games Bought:

Style Savvy: Fashion Forward
I didn’t technically buy it, as my boyfriend got it for me for Valentine’s Day. But it’s added to the backlog regardless, so it goes in here!  I’ve always wanted to play this game, but couldn’t really justify buying it for myself.

New Games Started:

Style Savvy: Fashion Forward – In Progress
If My Heart Had Wings – In Progress
LISA: The Joyful – In Progress

Games Beaten:

LISA: The Painful
This was a doozy.  All the way back for Extra Life 2015, I played a good chunk of this game for my 24 hour stream.  After that, though, I didn’t touch it again–I remember being rather frustrated with the game, but… considering that I was gaming live for a good 18 hours, the fact that I kept jumping to my death was a rather… trivial complaint when I played again.  So, yesterday I booted it up, and just beat it.  It’s a flawed, but wonderful game–I would have given up had I not looked up a damn map for the place, or caved and used a walkthrough for the last area, but the setting and the dark plot is quite good, even if the game does try to beat the “THIS PLACE SUCKS” hammer over your head a few too many times.

Games Completed:

Pokemon Sun
I beat Pokemon Sun last year, but this week marks a different goal for this game… I’ve completed the Alolan Pokedex!  It only took a grand total of 64 hours too.  My Pokemon from all my older games helped with this goal A LOT… although I still had to evolve a Garchomp (seriously, where did my first one go?).  Not only that, but I made a Living Alolan Dex (one of each Pokemon in the box), so filling out that Pokedex in the future will be way easier.  There is no National Dex in Sun and Moon, so thankfully I didn’t have to get all 800+ Pokemon, although I do have a large amount of them… I may work on a Living National Dex in the future, but for now I’m setting this aside to work on my backlog more.

In Progress:

LISA: The Joyful
I’m only a short way into this, but I’m pretty excited to see where this ends.  It’s cool to be able to play as Buddy, and see… well, the continuation of what the cycle of all the shitty stuff that happens has shaped her psyche.  Spoilers, it’s not in a good way.

Style Savvy: Fashion Forward
A couple hours into this, and having a blast making new outfits and stuff.  I’m still not done with the tutorial stuff, I think.

If My Heart Had Wings
Played for about an hour one night this week, as I used the Backloggery’s Fortune Cookie to choose something for me.  This VN has quite a few good reviews, but the game also released before the visual novel popularity exploded in the West over the last year or two, so I’m wondering if the game stacks up to the far larger selection of today.  I’m not impressed so far, but I’ll give it another hour or two before passing judgement.

Shining Force II
I was playing this for my Summer Gaming Challenge last year, but I stopped about halfway through, mostly out of boredom to be honest.  I’ve picked it back up, gotten through a few more battles, and now I’m about to heal a sick dwarf or something.  Steam’s Sega Classics emulator make my computer crazy hot for some reason, and if I plug my laptop into my TV the audio gets majorly messed up (doesn’t happen with my other games), so it’s kind of annoying me.  I might download a different emulator and ROM and continue on that, if I can pull the save data file out and it’s compatible.  A Genesis game should not be causing my computer to overheat when the likes of Life Is Strange was fine.

Goals for Next Week:

Well, my attention is a little divided, I’m in a bit of a slump and I don’t really know what I want to play.  Hopefully over the course of the week I can decide what to do next.

That about does it!  Hopefully I’ll knock out a lot of these in progress games next week, whether they are beats or I just remove them from my backlog entirely.  See you next time!

Summer Gaming Challenge 2016–Let’s Go!

It’s that time of the year again… time to waste my summer playing video games.  Well, not really, but since I’m taking the entire summer off classes this seems like the perfect opportunity to catch up on some classics.

For those unaware the Summer Gaming Challenge is a challenge done at the Racketboy forums every year.  It’s where you play 10 games that are considered “classics” (in whatever definition of the word you want to use) and sound off your thoughts about them.  Since the summertime is typically hot and younger participants usually have a lot more free time, it’s the perfect period to catch up on some games that may have fallen on the wayside.

I will, of course, keep my updates here, on my long neglected blog.  Everytime I finish a game, I’ll do a write up on it.  Simple enough.  I fully plan on beating all of these games by the end of August, before my classes start up again.  Of course… since I’m really dead set on making that goal, I’ve also made sure there aren’t *too* many RPGs on my list.  Because otherwise it’d be way too much.

Without further ado, here is my list for this year:

Super Metroid (SNES via Wii U VC)
Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
Earthbound (SNES via Wii U VC)
Shining Force II (Genesis via Steam)
Kirby’s Adventure (NES via Kirby’s Dream Collection)
The Legend of Zelda (NES via 3DS VC)
Metal Gear Solid (PS1 via PSOne Classics)
Suikoden II (PS1 via PSOne Classics)
Harvest Moon: Back to Nature (PS1 via PSOne Classics)
Radiant Historia (DS)

Five console games, five handheld games (since I’ll play PSOne Classics on my Vita).  A nice split!

Well, that’s about it.  My Summer Gaming Challenge will be starting now, and I have until the end of August to beat them all!
